Mac OS Forge has announced that Apple was withdrawing from the project ZFS.
Oracle does not want
ZFS is a 128-bit file developed by Sun for professional environments. But since the takeover by Oracle, its future is uncertain, since the latter has its own file system, the btrfs.
NetApp does not love
Worse yet, NetApp announced that ZFS infringed certain of its patents for technologies that provide its own. No complaints have been filed yet, but it seems that this is primarily because the file system is doomed to die. In these circumstances it is understandable why Apple did not include the ZFS in Snow Leopard Server, as expected, and why he withdrew from the project.
A good start, but ...
To recall, Apple has begun to show interest in the file system from Sun in 2006 and in 2007, a module to read data written on a ZFS volume was released on Mac OS Forge. Its absence in the list of features Snow Leopard Server community were surprised. The problem is that HFS + (the filesystem used by Snow Leopard Server) is increasingly obsolete for data centers and Apple must quickly find a solution.
