When Intel began manufacturing the second generation of solid-state disk X25-M, the manufacturer promised to update the firmware with support for TRIM after the announcement of Windows 7. Now, just a week after the latest operating system, Microsoft, Intel has released updated firmware for X25-M G2. The new firmware supports ATA Data Set Management Command, known as TRIM, and promises more speed record users 160GB SSD. According to Intel, the maximum speed of continuous recording with 160GB G2 has been increased from 70Mb / s to 100Mb / s. Impressive increase, carried out with only a firmware update, however, seems to 80GB drives new firmware such action will not have a magic. According to Intel, a 80GB drive smaller flash memory chips than the 160GB drives, and so they use less overlap, which in turn affects the maximum recording speed.

Those who have not yet turned to the SSD, considering that they are in operation quickly slowed, TRIM promises to review the methods of rewriting the flash memory. The new firmware will be at every opportune moment completely clean the cell with the data that have been marked as deleted, but has not yet been erased completely. This should allow the disk to provide more empty cells available for recording, and reduce long-term decrease in productivity.

New firmware can be downloaded from Intel site. Intel also released a utility SSD Toolbox and Optimizer, which allows users to run different programs for diagnostics disk, and even adjusts the TRIM manually. The only catch: to use this utility will need X25-M of the second generation. Intel does not plan to provide support for TRIM SSD for its first generation.
