Elan Digital Systems has just introduced the smallest USB controller in the world only 4 mm x 4 mm and a thickness of 0.9 mm, it is the USBHC869.
Aimed at embedded world, the chip requires intensity of 4 uA at rest, 20 mA load, and should integrate systems using a processor 8 or 16 bits. The controller, embedded in a 36 pin LGA package, also has the distinction of managing a throughput of 12 Mbps without having to go through the DMA (Direct Memory Access) CPU, which simplifies designs. The chip is intended to tools like mobile phones, smartphones, UMPC and MID.
