Some time ago, a new version of MCP79 chipset had appeared under the name THE ION. This version, designed for Windows XP netbooks, abandoned compatibility and DirectX 10 content with version 9 (only supported on Windows XP). Obviously, nobody was fooled: NVIDIA had not changed its chip for Microsoft and it was thought that the clamping was at the BIOS level of the machine (with ION LE, DirectX 10 could not be activated, even under Windows Vista or September), but it is not.
A history of driver
In fact, it is much simpler: it is a driver issue. The ION classic (DirectX 10) and the ION LE (DirectX 9) are differentiated and just edit a few characters. Inf file (which contains the parameters of compatible devices) to "transform" a chip into a DirectX 9 DirectX 10 chip. And once Windows Seven (or Vista), everything is fully functional. A priori (values may vary depending on engine), the ION conventional chips are identified in the file NV_DISP.inf the values 0865, 0874, 0876 and 087D, while the ION uses identifiers 087E or 087F. Using a value of the first to second in the drivers so it is possible to transform into THE ION.
