Mandriva actively preparing the release of a new Linux distribution. InstantON incorporates the concept of mini-OS we saw land in recent years on the motherboards of some manufacturers. The goal is to make available some basic tasks in seconds, less than 10 in the case of distribution of Mandriva. Features will include Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice, as well as instant messaging (Pidgin or Empathy) and a media player.
Widgets will be present, while a complete connectivity (WiFi, 3G) is the game. InstantON is obviously computer manufacturers, which will have a turnkey solution, with customization options, but also the general public. The latter will be satisfied with the final version provided by Red Hat, against 10 to 15 euros. The distribution will occupy between 300MB and 1GB following choices of software, and the degree of compression. A loader will choose between InstantON and a conventional operating system such as Microsoft Windows.
