A so-called PWM fan controller controls the speed of a fan by feeding the engine of the fan with power pulses instead of a constant low voltage. The advantage is that you can control the fan speed on a more precise way, both manually and automatically. Zalman says that it has now launched the world's first PWM-based fan control, PWM Mate, which is designed for use with your 4-pin CPU fan, can control the fan voltage to between 25% and 100% strength.

Users can choose to let the controller handle fan speed automatically in three modes, or simply manually set the speed with slider. The device measures 55 (L) x 24 (W) x 13.5 (H) mm and uses a 4-pin fan connector to connect to the motherboard and on to the CPU fan.

Fan control has already been presented in connection with the manufacturer CNPS10X series of coolers but is now also available for other systems. When we get to see the controller on the market and at what price is unclear.
