An update of PowerDVD, the reading program from Cyberlink, will offer a new option: a larger (upscaling) content SD (standard definition) through the NVIDIA CUDA technology. This technology, available on the GeForce 8 (and the ION platform) can use the power of stream processors graphics cards to perform calculations more generic than what we usually carry on a graphics card and Cyberlink (as ArcSoft before them) proposes to perform the calculations necessary for upscaling. This technique, which is to extrapolate an SD image (typically an image from a DVD) to make it usable on a Full HD screen (for example) requires power.
Overall, several techniques exist: either use a specialized chip (with most televisions and some - rare - screens) do nothing (if the majority of screen) or use a software algorithm with a general chip (if used here or with the PlayStation 3 and Cell). In fact, experience shows that the most effective technique is the last (the PlayStation 3 is the reference current upscaling) and the idea that Cyberlink is not devoid of interest. Hopefully, the upscaling is more effective than Arcsoft: SimHD with a GeForce 9400M chip (16 stream processors) hardly upscaler DVD's to 1080p, you have to settle for 720p.
