An American satellite (Intelsat IS-14) has just been launched and it has a peculiarity: it is part of the IRIS (Internet Routing In Space). This project, launched by the U.S. military in partnership with Cisco, is to place the router in space. And this first satellite has a router provided by Cisco, specially built for operation in space (including components resistant to radiation). The system, which measures 60 x 45 x 45 cm, can work at 100 Mbps and energy necessary for its operation is obviously provided by solar panels. Interestingly, the modem may be updated from the ground and has integrated Cisco's IOS operating system into the camera. Note that if the satellites are on a speed of 100 Mbps, the U.S. military has planes (Boeing) can offer the same services but at 1 gigabit / s, while being particularly used for guiding missiles.
