IBM has just introduced its Portable Modular Data Center (PMDC), consisting of servers placed in standard sized containers to be transported.

The portable data center

The PMDC vary in size, a container measuring 2.5 mx 6 m or 12 m or 16 m. IBM had given it some eighteen months to test them. It now goes to marketing. The container includes everything needed to run the data center, namely the power supply, cooling system service and remote management. Big Blue has also provided several protections in case of fire, smoke, humidity, condensation or rapid and extreme changes in temperature.

The IBM version

Sun, SGI and HP also offer containers incorporating data centers, but IBM says that its solution is unique because there are entries on the front and rear of the container, thus facilitating maintenance. It would also be more resistant and the internal architecture is open, which means it is possible to connect a cooling rack or an uninterruptible power supply brand third.
