Once a big name of chipsets, VIA is now relegated to the niche of low-power processors and motherboards miniatures. And yet, the company, a pioneer in this field has made eclipsed by Intel and Atom. But VIA does not give up. Not content to start producing its new processor Nano 3000(which should give trouble to the Atom), the company announced a new chipset with the graphics supports DirectX 10.1 and OpenCL.

Called VN1000, this chipset is compatible with all processors VIA Eden C7 or Nano. Its 520 Chrome IGP accelerates decoding of H.264 video streams, WMV9 and VC1 and manages DisplayPort and HDMI outputs. With its engine Chromotion 2.0 it supports DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4, OpenGL 3.0 and even 1.0 OpenCL. Ah yes, it will be possible to take advantage of GPGPU on this chipset. As the latest graphics cards S3 5400E, however.

Associated with the new VT8261 Southbridge, Northbridge VN1000 consumes 12 Watts. Overall, the platform Nano 3000 + chipset should consume slightly less than 40 W over (assuming that 3000 is the Nano at the Nano, or 25 W at 2 GHz). Good, but rather high compared to the Pineview Atom future.
