As you probably know, we have tested the exclusive JMF612 JMicron controller that succeeds the fatal JMF602. This controller brings something new compared to its predecessor with an on-die cache of 128 KB and the possibility to send an external memory chip, acting as a cache. Finally, flows are interesting with nearly 250 MB / s sequential read and 170MB / s sequential write.

Our test confirmed the good performance but we had doubts about some points as risky behavior with certain types of files, without relying on the stability problems. It is clear that this controller is very young and the firmware that fitted our A-Data S596 wiping plaster. For this test, we are in regular contact with engineers from A-DATA to find solutions to problems. This will result in a new firmware, in collaboration with JMicron, due out in January 2010 and will settle the problems we encountered. The icing on the cake, it will support the TRIM although for now the SSD has not really needed given the low performance degradation. But perhaps the support of TRIM will enable the development of other algorithms improving the management of random writes but initiating the stable performance, hence the interest found TRIM.

We obviously do not fail to inform you of improvements to the firmware once we have tested!
