As previously disclosed, Intel will launch its six-core enthusiast processor Gulftown under the name Core i7 980X. The new 32 nanometer processor has been manufactured in the hands of overclockers and enthusiasts for a long time, although it should not exist anywhere outside of Intel's labs, which also resulted in several early. Now comes further testing and overclocking results with 3.07 GHz processor is pushed over the border 6GHz.
We have previously seen over clocking as high as 6.5 + GHz with Intel Gulftown, but then it was all about the past 2.4GHz engineering samples. Exactly what distinguishes the new 3.07 GHz model of these is unclear but who published the results of XtremeSystems.org seems even managed to achieve good clock speeds on the memory and Northbridge / Uncore. There Northbridge worked in over 4.6 GHz.
Overclock was using an ASUS Rampage II Extreme motherboard and rbuass took the opportunity to run through a few rounds in SuperPi 5.98GHz, among other things, resulted in a SuperPi 1M results in 6922 sec.
It is quite clear that Gulftown not supposed to have no trouble achieving good rates because of their extra two cores. With 32nm technology, there seems to be the potential for really great results.
