Hard drive giant Western Digital has now shown that it is serious once embarking on the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 market. In a press release disclosing that the company has now launched a partnership with NEC Electronics, the manufacturer of the first USB 3.0-checks of motherboards, which will culminate in a special optimized UASP driver with up to 30 percent higher data rates.

USB Attached SCSI Protocol (USAP) is a new industry standard that is supposed to increase performance and storage capacity with the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 format. Especially developed to overcome limitations in Bulk Only Transfer (BOT) protocol that was developed for the USB 2.0 standard.

In addition to a performance increase of almost 30%, the new driver also provide more efficient power consumption, and WD is supposed to be first to market with devices using the new protocol. Exactly when this happens is unclear, but we would be quite surprised if we do not present the USB 3.0 devices at CES next month.
