Cisco has announced that the first tests of the router IRIS traveling on the IS-14 satellite have been a success and the firm is considering an IP network to facilitate communications between various satellites.

The IP to the conquest of space

The router that is resistant to radiation was launched into space last November 23. The army will now test this system during the next three months to see if it is viable and effective. Indeed, in addition to link satellites, IRIS will be used to send data, VoIP and video to ground receivers, thus reducing latency and route information. Once the military tests ended, Cisco will look for one year the viability of commercial use of this router.

The problem of communications satellites

IRIS facilitates communications among satellites that converse - in principle - either by making use of relays or else by foremost sending their signal equipment on earth, who are dependable for returning the data in space. It is a complex system can be slow and sometimes lack of pragmatism.
