The 802.16m standard, otherwise known as WiMAX 2 should be completed by September 2010. The initial tests should be carried out in 2011 for deployment in 2012.

The new network has a theoretical bandwidth of 100 Mbps per user with a smart antenna system and the use of multichannel. Its scope will remain unchanged cons by about 50 km of the access point. The IEEE, in charge of defining the standard, said he had concentrated on increasing the speed for those who already have WiMAX, instead of trying to expand coverage. Once certification is finalized, developers will work on compatible products, which took a year with the first WiMAX. One expects a similar period for this new version.
