The Santa Clara giant will launch by the end of the quarter's first Itanium in almost three years, the biggest change since four years...
Finally! That's probably what sighed team responsible for development of the Itanium "Tukwila." Intel is working on this new generation processor for a very long time. In 2003, the codename of the new Itanium had been changed from "Tanglewood" in Tukwila. In 2006, at the launch of Itanium 2 "Montecito" Tukwila was expected for 2007. In 2009, the giant Santa Clara had rejected the new generation once more. This processor is so late that it has now exceeded the planned launch date of its successor, "Poulson"! It seems that this is the right time; Intel has started mass production and launches its new processor in the current quarter.
Tukwila will have four cores, eight threads, 30 MB of cache, two (or four, it is not clear) DDR3 memory controllers ... etc.. Engraved to 65 nanometers, it is expected to exceed two billion transistors. Its frequency would be in a range from 1.2 GHz to 2 GHz with a TDP that is between 130 and 170 watts. This processor will use the link QuickPath Interconnect introduced the Nehalem micro architecture, so it should be compatible with the Xeon motherboards "Beckton" (Socket LGA-1567). The next Itanium after Tukwila will Poulson is expected within 2 (6) years. He will jump the burn process to 45 nm and is directly engraved at 32 nm.
