Yes, now in vogue solid state drives, but the traditional storage devices based on magnetic disks is still ruled by a ball. Many companies are moving to a tiered storage approach, using both HDD, and SSD, but they still require a large capacity at a relatively economical price. Most servers are now translated into 2.5 "drives to increase storage density and reduce energy consumption. These small drives have less storage capacity, but that the server can hold more such drives.

Seagate is one of the largest manufacturers of 2.5 "hard drives, spinning at a speed of 10k rpm. The company presented its latest model Savvio 10k.4 capacity of 450 GB and 600 Gb. These drives use three plates, that is a bit strange, as the producer is already using discs with a higher density in some of their mobile offers. Competitor, Western Digital, also plans to release the 600 GB version of its Velociraptor 10k drive the next generation over the next few months.

The cause of these discs is that, according to Seagate, its customers are demanding greater potential. The company is currently working on another drive, which will be used 300 GB of the plate, but this solution will be available only at the end of this year. Rather than force customers to wait several months, the manufacturer decided to release now, 600 GB 2.5 "drives. Discs enterprises, require thorough testing and inspection before introducing them into the world market, so that Seagate was able to collect much data on the new disk.

Drive Savvio 10k.4 achieved MTBF of 2 million hours and the probability of failure during the year 0.44%, this is the first disc with similar characteristics. According to the manufacturer, it helps to ensure the reliability of 20% higher than that of any other disk. The new Seagate hard drive will be available in versions with a Fiber Channel interface 4Gbit / s or SAS 6Gbit / sec.
