Xilinx, which creates variety of chips frequently utilized in communications gear, plans to release its first 28-nanometer chips by fourth quarter of this year to lower prices and attract new consumers as world pulls out of recession.
Contract chip companies starts generating variety of chips with transistors and other parts as tiny as 28nm around mid of this year for Xilinx and other companies that announced plans to create advanced chips, containing Altera and STMicroelectronics. A nanometer is billionth of meter, about size of some atoms joint.
Decreasing size of parts on chip lowers power utilize increases performance and decreases price of chips, all key advantages at a time when people want smaller devices that can do more.
What holds few companies back from 28nm chips is price and severe design work for first blueprints. Companies can use months and tens of millions of dollars to twist their designs for mass chip production.
But prizes for big companies are value it. Xilinx approximates its 28nm chips decrease total power utilize by 50 percent compared to earlier generations, as other improvements can more drive down power use and lower system prices by 33 percent, company said in statement on Monday.
Xilinx's major competitor in programmable chip business, Altera, is preparing 28nm chips. Altera says chips and few of its own improvements are required for range of new computing trends that need high bandwidth, like high-definition video, cloud computing, online data storage and mobile video.
Tools developers require raising system bandwidth for these applications as remaining in severe power and price budgets, Altera said, and 28nm chips help meet those needs.
Company says it will embed 28Gbps transceivers on its forthcoming 28nm chips, but it didn’t say when those chips would be obtainable. Xilinx plans to have its 28nm chips made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics' contract chip-making subsidiary, Samsung Semiconductor Foundry.
TSMC said it begins mass making 28nm chips intended at computing, wireless and networking device for many consumers soon after this year and plans to use company record high of US$4.8 billion in 2010 on innovative production lines.
Samsung is frequently global leader in assets using on chip factories because of its collapsing memory chip operations, as is Intel, world's largest chip maker.
Intel and Micron already revealed new 25nm flash memory chips at IM Flash Technologies combined project, first business chip products created by advanced 25nm developed technology. Samsung is operational on 30nm technology and plans to utilize it in many of its memory chip production lines by end of 2010.
Creating memory chips at tiny sizes is simple than logic chips like microprocessors or communications chips intended by Xilinx and Altera. Logic chips are difficult. Intel has shown off microprocessors created using 32nm technology, as its IM Flash combined venture is using smaller 25nm technology.
