NVidia ensures that production problems with the TSMC 40-nanometer process will be an unpleasant memory of the past only by mid-year.

A few days ago we wrote that the 28-nanometer GPU will reach only in late 2011. In January, however, TSMC announced it had solved the problems with the production process to 40 nanometers. Where is the truth? According to David White, head of financial resources of NVidia, the production at 40 nanometers spiccherà the flight only after mid 2010.

"Until December, the problems with 40-nanometer wafer concerned the production yield. TSMC has made many improvements. Today, the capacity problems are related to equipment and not to yield. There is still room for improvement. We look forward, this situation should be resolved approximately half year, "said White at Goldman Sachs Technology Conference.

"When we present Fermi (March 26), which is in volume production today - and which we believe will become common among the second and third quarter - the low yields are a thing of the past."

NVidia seems to be optimistic about having a good number of cards based on core GF100 (architecture Fermi) already at launch. According to the latest rumors published by Digitimes, though, the manufacturers of video cards second group have not yet received the reference design. NVidia would in fact giving priority to the best-known brands or manufacturers who make only exclusive proprietary solutions. Perhaps the concept of "volume" is a bit 'vague, not only for us but also among the companies themselves.
