The new 20-nanometer chip developed technology for future DRAM production is learned by Micron and Taiwanese partner Nanya Technology, president of Nanya said Wednesday.
This is vital to develop chip presentation, decrease power use and lower costs. Improvement of this is vital to manufacturers in upcoming time to stay viable in DRAM industry, said Jih Lien.
Creating chips with 20nm technology put Micron and Nanya in rivalry with industry leader Samsung Electronics, which is now installing 30nm technology on its production lines. Samsung said that 2Gb DDR3 chips created by its 30nm manufacturing technology use 30 percent less power than chips created by 50nm production technology and created at over double cost effectiveness.
Samsung is with 30nm technology for DRAM for its competitors. Micron and Nanya said they are installing 42nm technology on DRAM production lines and have 30 something nanometer chip production technology in making at research labs in Idaho. Lien didn’t offer timeline and any details about 20nm technology that his company and Micron are exploring.
One company Micron has division of, IM Flash Technologies, a combined project with Intel, is by 25nm technology to create flash memory chips. The company does not make DRAM.
The nanometer measurement explains size of transistors and other elements on chip. A nanometer is billionth of meter, about size of some atoms joint.
