Microsoft senior executive said Microsoft plans to invest $9.5 billion on R & D this year. The amount is around $3 billion more than the next closest technology company. Much of Microsoft's investments center around "cloud" services, or online computing gives to users from hosted data centers.
"Especially in light of the hard macroeconomic times that we are coming out of, we chose to really lean in and double down on our modernism," Turner said.
Turner asserted that Microsoft has additional cloud services than any further company, ranging from its users e-mail service to hosted enterprise products like its Dynamics CRM system to its Azure cloud OS."We are going to vary and reinvent our company around leading in the cloud," Turner said.
Though, Turner said Microsoft will still have a major on-premise software business. Microsoft has come under rising pressure from companies like Google that sell office productivity suites that are completely online before installed on PCs. Microsoft has argued that there will always be a require for client software, which can carry more features.
Turner protects the company's upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series OS, which will be available on phones later this year. Microsoft faces heavy rivalry from vendors like Apple, Nokia and other manufacturers using Google's Android OS.
Turner said the mobile Operating System is a full repair from earlier ones and is closely included with other Microsoft products like its X-box gaming and Zune music products. Windows Phone 7 Series is "not a 'me too' product," Turner said.
