Belkin has launched 3 new Wi-Fi routers that have no great thing of being based on applications designed to facilitate the life of the user; it is the Surf, Share, Play and Play Max.
Classic features and price but a little expensive
All routers run the 2.4 GHz MIMO WPA2 and 256 bits. The Surf is quite basic and is expected to $ 50. The Share Offer a USB port also, billed $ 80, which seems a little unnecessary. The play includes the Dual Band and 5 GHz for $ 99 while the Play Max has Gigabit ports, a second USB port and all the applications available, all for $ 130. Belkin says they will be available in Europe in May and if prices are not yet known, we think they should be the same to those in dollars.
Applications
The application system developed by Belkin would have been interesting, but it is finally a marketing tool to highlight features that have always existed in routers.
There is thus a connection wizard that detects and repairs issues network "software" that connects the printer to the network, or a program doing automatic backups on external hard drives connected. Finally there is an application to share music over the network and with its Xbox 360 or the PS3 and a BitTorrent client to keep on downloading even if the system is disconnected.
An interesting idea poorly exploited
We believe the plan could be interesting if life easier for developers to inspire them to build modules simply optimizing the router without having to flash the firmware and risking its security. It would be a way to open the system and permit enthusiasts to push the performance of their network.
But in the end, it's much ado about nothing. The fact that there are 5 different Varity of router and each manages a series of application is more confusing. It would have been preferable to have a cheap router and AppStore to buy the features you want to customize the router with the programs that we will actually use, sinking the final bill, while providing a model different economic and viable.
