McAfee Internet Security takes the 7th spot in our 2010 roundup of security suites. It did a good job at detecting malware, its interface is fresh and separate from the pack, and it has a solid set of features. Though, our tests show that McAfee's suite slowed system performance more than a lot of competing security products did, flattening its ranking.
McAfee has fully redesigned the interface for Internet Security 2010, and we like its fresh approach. It's instinctive and easy to work with, and its look is quite unlike any other security suite. Sections are called drawers; click the section, and the drawer opens to expose the settings and status of every component. The top part remains fixed, offering a static overview of the whole product.
The suite proved effective at cleaning up active infections; it detected all test infections, disabled 87%, and completely removed 47%. That removal rate was about average for the products we tested; the suites we tested were normally effective at disabling infections, but often left malware components behind.
