A few days after Sharp are the turn of Hitachi announced the release of running a 3D screen without needing special glasses. On a diagonal of 3.1 inches, this screen displays a resolution of 480 x 854 FWVGA pixels, and boasts a contrast ratio of 1000: 1 and a brightness of 400 cd / mē.

A history and parallax barrier

The technology used by this LCD uses an IPS panel which is affixed a grid. Auto-stereoscopic parallax barrier allows broadcasting a different image depending on the angle of vision: each eye of the viewer sees his own image, thereby reproducing a stereoscopic 3D effect. Only drawback: the viewer must take a few tens of centimeters from the screen to benefit from this effect. In addition, 3D perception fades.

We note in passing that the recently announced Nintendo's 3DS is just a portable console featuring free 3D effects. It therefore remains to be seen whether Nintendo will choose the model of Sharp and Hitachi 3D display to equip its console.
