In its place of Windows, Google is reportedly contribution staffs the option among Macs running Apple's Mac OS X and PCs running Linux.

"There must be other reasons besides safety for such a move," said John Pescatore, a forecaster at Gartner who concentrate in security issues.

"As an academic exercise, yes, the 'security-by-obscurity' model works," he said, referring to the idea that users are safer running Mac OS X and Linux since they have much minor market shares than Windows, and so presents hackers a less attractive target.

That's why the majority malware is written for Windows machines, Pescatore said.
"But for Google or for that matter a company like Oracle or Cisco it doesn't, because target them specially," he continued. "If know that Google utilize Macs, then they'll just target the corporation with Mac malware. And Mac malware exists."
