Intel plans to launch a version of its Atom processor previous next year that's intended for ultra-thin netbooks and tablet PCs.
Called Oak Trail, the futures chip package is a variation of the Moorestown package launched in May. The two products together contain the low-power Lincroft version of the Atom processor.
The only dissimilarity is that Oak Trail's version of the Langwell chipset contains carry for various input-output kinds used in PCs.
"It's captivating the power optimization of Moorestown, which was under attack at pocketable devices counting phones, leveraging that venture of Intel's and adding on to it 'port-of-choice' aptitude so that we can carry a Windows operating system.
A Meego operating system, other computer Linux operating systems, or Google OSes, as the market require develops," said Matthew Parker, general manager of Intel's Atom client division.
The main focus of Oak Trail is to reduce power consumption and enable thinner form factors for netbooks and tablets, Parket said. Specific details of Oak Trail, such as clock frequencies for the processor, were not available.
"What you'll see is a presentation cover for the products that distance from tablet to the smooth netbook that might or might not overlap with the presentation cover of the normal netbook and dual-core netbook," Parker said.
