The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced requirements for recordable and rewritable BDXL, the former having a capacity of 100 GB and 128 GB, 100 GB only cons for the latter. This new format is the coming of version 3.0 of BD-R and BD-RE 4.0. The fact that the BDA has placed these documents available to its partners means they can now buy the required licenses to manufacture and compatible media players. The recording of BD-R 100 GB and 128 GB can be complete at 2x or 4x using a system UDF 2.5/2.6 while rewritable media have a recording speed of 2x and use the UDF 2.5.
These new media will not use defensive cartridges. The first BDXL be used in professional fields. They must then arrive at the ordinary market a few years. The next step for the BDA will be the standardization and democratization of the IH-BD, declared at the same time as the BDXL. Both formats need new players compatible.
