Dell proclaimed that it plans to obtain Ocarina Networks, a creator of hardware and software designed to decrease amount of storage capacity enterprises require, for an unrevealed sum.
Ocarina makes appliances and software that execute data density and deduplication on unstructured data for example images and e-mail. Those steps help to decrease number of superfluous bits so data can be stored on less hard disk space, generating savings of space, power and other resources in data centers. Ocarina says its products can free up between 30 percent and 75 percent of a user's storage capacity. The corporation's technology will match Dell's Equal Logic enterprise storage arrays, Dell said.
Deduplication is in high demand among storage administrators as quantity of raw data they are asked to remain in storage rises. Previous year, EMC and NetApp twisted to acquire deduplication pioneer Data Domain, with EMC winning out in end by providing US.1 billion.
Dell is attempting to branch out from its PC and server roots to turn into a data center vendor with a broad scope, same as Hewlett-Packard or IBM. It sells variety enterprise storage products, as well as inside sourced gear for example Equal Logic line and rebranded equipment.
