IBM's zEnterprise system has an expansive so far even limited role. This "system of systems," as the corporation calls it, is yet operating in a mainframe-centric universe, though a superior one.

Its showpiece is a novel mainframe, zEnterprise 196, but focus in this launch is on permitting users to administer mainframe, and Power and x86 chips in a blade environment using the mainframe's comfort. OS support contains z/OS, Linux and AIX.

At its arrangement now here, corporation officials showed charts illustrating dual digit percentage savings if users remove away x86 server boxes in their data centers and utilize mainframe and blades in its place.

Those situations seem to work best if these x86 systems are running Linux. "As famous as Linux is, it stays an alternative in data center when contrast to Windows," said Charles King, an analyst at Pund-IT Inc. in Hayward, Calif.

Ambuj Goyal, IBM general manager for development and manufacturing, said Windows support is approaching, but he wouldn't present a possible timeframe. He said client wants were after this come near. "Windows environments are naturally split environments that have no similarity to workload on the mainframe," Goyal said.
