Oracle emerges to verify this week what many in the PC business by now supposed: The OpenSolaris project is departed. Oracle laid away its Solaris plan in an inner note that was leaked to the OpenSolaris mailing list. It says there work is focused on a profitable Solaris release that will assist increase the sale of its servers and other products.

"All of Oracle's efforts on binary distributions of Solaris technology will be alert on Solaris 11," the note states. "We will not make public any extra binary distributions, for instance nightly or bi-weekly builds of Solaris binaries, or an OpenSolaris 2010.05 or afterward distribution." Solaris 11 is the after that main update to the Solaris operating system, which Oracle has a stated will be declared next year.

Oracle will make public an open developer version of Solaris 11 afterward this year, namely Solaris 11 Express, which will come with an elective support plan, the memo says. It hopes to influence companies using OpenSolaris nowadays to switch to Solaris 11 Express, and most likely to Solaris 11 in the future.
