Been in China is the new super computer "Tianhe 1A" put into operation. With a performance of 2.507 petaflops in the Linpack benchmark surpassing the Chinese supercomputer the previous leader in the U.S. and even quite significantly. The Tianhe-1A combined Intel CPUs with Nvidia GPUs. Next week is the new edition of Top-500 list of fastest supercomputers in the world appears.
The administrators of the list have told the New York Times has already confirmed that the Chinese supercomputer will be the new leader well. Research institutions may remain open until 1 November report and measured values to submit their performance. The former leader, the super computer "Jaguar" of the U.S. National Center for Computational Science at Oak Ridge is one year removed it. Jaguar had a year ago supercomputer "Roadrunner" at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the dethroned. For full technical details of the Tianhe-1A are not yet been notified.
But already known that the system 14 336 multi-core server processors from Intel are in. There are a further 7168 Nvidia graphics chips from theTesla type M2050. They are based on Nvidia's current Fermi-architecture. The power of Tianhe 1A is estimated at 4.04 megawatts. Nvidia said that the use of graphics chips are not only high performance but also the relatively low energy consumption allows. GPUs would have to be upgraded without Tianhe 1A on approximately 50,000 processors to provide the same performance. Moreover, the power consumption would triple to twelve megawatts.
