Texas Instruments has in print its new attack on the ultra-portable souk with a new dual-core OMAP 4 chip made to power the a latest variety of tablets and smart phones.
The TI OMAP 4440 joins a pair of ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU cores with a Power SGX540 graphics accelerator to power in TI's words multimedia-rich mobile devices' counting the next production of smart phones and tablets.
Designed as an alternative to Nvidia's Tegra 2 level the new SOC starts on TI's original OMAP processors and gts claim 150 percent activity increase over the past generation Cortex-A8 processors it changes.
The 45nm CMOS production process has TI claims, resulted in a low power chip that still has the groan to perform high work such as 1080p30 video encoding and decoding 1080p stereoscopic 3D support an OpenGL ES-compatible graphics core and an integrated image signal processor.
