According to an Irish company of Web analytics, after a decade, eventually Windows XP’s usage share has been challenged and outdone by Microsoft’s own Windows 7 in the United States. Compared to the average 30.7% XP daily usage share, Windows 7’s daily usage share was measured to be 32.2%. Microsoft stated that it had sold more than 300 million licenses of Windows 7 till January.
Its milestone achievement for Windows 7 as this was the first time it has managed to outdo Windows XP superior trail in usage share in the US Microsoft has been promoting Windows 7 ever since its inception in October 2009 to increase its sales. Windows 7 has been Microsoft’s best and fastest selling operating system as per Horses Mouth. Statistics have also proved that Windows 7 was a success, especially compared to the customer’s mixed reception to his ancestor, Vista.
Furthermore StatCounter stats show that at present in United States Windows Vista (averaging 19.5% in April), and Apple (Mac OS averaging 14.8%) are the following most popular operating system after Windows 7 and Windows XP. Vista sales boomed in the U.S. by 35.6% in August 2009, two months before the release of Windows 7. On the other hand, XP sales decreased 50% during same period.
However, around the globe states of StatCounter are slightly different whish shows Windows 7 holds 31.5% of all operating systems usage share worldwide compared to 46.8% of XP that retains its throne globally, despite experiencing downfall in the United States.
Archrivals Net Applications’ data tells a different story with of Windows 7 popularity that doesn’t sound too good. According to its data, Windows 7 held only 24.2% of the global usage share of operating system till March wherein Windows XP holds 54.4% of the total shares. Net Applications data is country biased or influenced to be precise like most of its counterparts, wherein specific countries are given greater significance compared to others. So, to produce what are believed to be more precise figures, greater significance is given to the data gathered from China as it has higher number of users compared to the United States. This is the reason why Net Applications’ XP user states are higher compared to that of StatCounter’s as practically the entire Chinese Internet-using population favors XP compared to Windows 7 or other OS’s.
Net Applications and StatCounter both have different calculation algorithms in which the operating system usage share is monitored by number that reaches on their client’s sites. However, Net application gives significance as per national boundaries too.
Though, Microsoft has nothing against Windows XP it is pushing its users to make a move to the later and advanced version, i.e., Windows 7. Microsoft executives are even calling its veteran Windows XP lowest common denominator, while they are working on the IE9 that is compatible only with the later versions of Windows operating system i.e. Windows Vista and Windows 7. To believe StatCounter audience in the US are being more open and keeping abreast with the technological advancements.
