Broadcom is launching its first processor for the FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) in the market. The processors are being launched in the network adapters which are EMC qualified and is known to be around 80% faster than other FCoE components.
According to Broadcom, the capability of FCoE has been introduced into the network adapter platform which is a single ASIC having a huge processing speed of 1.7 million operations per second. Importantly, it can be used either in the dedicated server platform or LAN-on –motherboard products. Page Tagizad who is the product line manager for high-speed controllers also added that this would also be demonstrated in Cisco Live customer conference in Las Vegas on Monday.
FCoE is specifically designed for the creation of Fibre Channel connection over 10-Gigabit Ethernet, which permits the business houses to arrange one type of network across their LANs and SANs. The system will also reduce the cost of the linking servers and storage as it would cut out the need for separate adapters. The network consolidation can be highly useful as they are useful for reducing the space as well as power requirement in the data center.
According to Tagizad, as the increasing number of virtual servers advances the flow of packets in and out of physical servers, the data centers will require the high performing chips like that of Broadcom. He added that most of the servers use the Gigabit Ethernet connections presently but within a few years will switch on to 10-Gigabit Ethernet.
Crehan explore analyst secede Crehan told that a big number of parties are buying the products with FCoE. contributing promote, he said that more than 300, 000 transcribers as well as LOM products have been transported in the first quarter of 2011, which was around 500, 000 in 2010. Crehan added that 1/3 of all 10-Gigabit Ethernet adapters and LOM now have FCoE.
Intel declared its Free FCoE software mass in January and has offered it as an upgrade to its 10 Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapter X520 family. The Open FCoE software is specified for usage in Windows and Linux as well as EMC, NetApp Storage. Crehan said that through Broadcom complies the QLogic, Intel, Emulex, still it can maintain easy in this domain.
The new chip by Broadcom can be easily used for NAS (Network attached Storage), 10-GB Ethernet along with iSCSI, FCoE and TCP/IP according to Tagizad by Broadcom. The product has been useable at Broadcom from January onwards and has been open for shipping since March in the Dell Broadcom 57712-k met Network Daughter Card. The card is sold as “FCoE ready” and its software can be easily downloaded from this month ahead. The cost of 57712-k cost is US$499.
The company is planning to market Cisco 10-Gigabit Ethernet BCM57712 Network Adapter this month. The products of Cisco and Dell work absolutely well with Windows and Linux and would be able to support the future versions of VMware. The card has been certified to work effectively with Cisco's UCS C-Series blade servers and Dell's PowerEdge M710HD and M915 servers.
