AMD announced that it has recentlyshipped the first 16-core chips for its servers. This is an advancingstep for the company as it is trying to renew its drooping fortune.

In a statement, AMD announced that itis soon going to offer the server based on 16-core Opteron chip bythe code name Interlagos by the fourth quarter. According to DeanMcCarron, the principal analyst at Mercury Research suspected thatthe AMD server could appear in the near future as it is a generaltrend to launch products after the release of chips.

According to the AMD’s spokespersonall the particulars about the chip including the power consumptionand clock speed are likely to be announced in the fourth quarter.

As speculated the chip would be anintegral part of Opteron 6200 chip family. The chip is specificallysupported by the new Bulldozer micro architecture of the company. Asannounced by AMD, the new Bulldozer processor is known to be morethan 50% faster than the other processors. Besides, it would alsopossess higher memory throughput than the present 12-core Opteron6100 chips. Interestingly, the Bulldozer architecture utilizes bothfloating point units and CPU cores to execute a large number ofoperations in every clock cycle at lower rate of power consumption.

In a statement issued by the company, the 16-core chips would be used for both cloud as well asvirtualization workloads.

In the second quarter, AMD had a lowmarket share of 5.5% in the server processor market. On the otherhand, Intel enjoyed a huge market share of 94.5% according to thelatest reports of IDC. Rory Read has been hired as the CEO of AMDlast month and according to the analysts, his top precedence mustinclude increasing the server business of the firm.
