Have you checked the latest buzz in e-world? As per the latest information, Oracle is planning to launch two or more systems that are a combination of both hardware and software. In fact, one of the appliances is specifically targeted for Big data and the other for in-memory computing capabilities.
On Sunday, at the Oracle's OpenWorld conference in San Francisco, all the new appliances admitting Big Data Appliance and Oracle Exalytics Business Intelligence machine were exhibited outside the main keynote hall.
As per reliable information sources, a line of security guards were standing in front of the roped off machines. The appliances also included the new Exadata database machine and Exalogic application server appliance designed by Oracle. Besides, the show goers were not allowed to photograph any of the products. The pictures could only be published after the release of CEO Larry Ellison's keynote, which is scheduled for another Sunday. It is expected that Larry Ellison would bring in new information about the product which are now expected to be released in market for long.
In fact, the description cards were pasted behind the security ropes offering fabulous and enlightening information about the new machines. According to the latest information offered about the Big Data appliance, it is engineered to run the open-source Hadoop framework for large-scale data processing with complete ease. It is also capable of running the Oracle NoSQL database" while integrating with Exadata.
According to analyst Curt Monash of Monash Research, NoSQL is a catch-all term for data stores and is defined as by “what they exclude: SQL, joins, strong analytic alternatives to those, and some forms of database integrity. If you leave all four out, and you have a strong scale-out story, you're in the NoSQL mainstream.”
Adding further, he stated, “Using NoSQL can make sense when at least one of two things is paramount: low-cost scale-out or dynamic schemas. What you give up are the query flexibility and the easily automatic data integrity of SQL-based systems.”
Exalytics offer “optimized BI foundation with advanced visualizations”. The appliances work brilliantly for BI and EPM (enterprise performance management) applications. As per the latest information about the appliances it is also optimized for Exadata.
Till date, it is not clear about the technologies used in these new innovations. It is quite possible that NoSQL and in-memory components might be based on Oracle’s existing technologies or some new innovations. It is quite likely that Oracle NoSQL database which is used in the card can possibly be based on the BerkeleyDB product of Berkeley. On the other hand, the Oracle's TimesTen in-memory database is one of the most important components of Exalytics.
