New Linux kernel released without penguin

Since its first release Penguin or Tux was the sole identity of linux and that is why this release is going to be the most happening and controverserial. The new release consists several new features, hardware support and security fixes.

Kernel 2.6.29 has some important changes, including some enhanced support for the Brtfs file system which will replace Ext and better support for WiMax wireless radio. But users are more likely to notice that Torvalds has removed Tux and replaced him with a Tasmanian Devil wearing a penguin mask. This is a temporary measure to support the Australian campaign to save the rare marsupial.

"I've merged the new Tuz logo, so now my laptop boots up with two of these guys showing. See an earlier post about the plush version of this that I got while in Hobart for LCA 2009," said Torvalds on his own blog.

"Also see the Save The Tasmanian Devil site for details about the devils plight." Other changes in the kernel are largely going to go unnoticed Torvalds said but they include upgrading the the OCFS (Oracle Cluster Filesystem) and the addition of the squashFS filesystem, which is integrated for the first time. Now its time to wait and see whether the Musked Devil gets better popularity than the cuddly penguin?
