Default Installation of Printer Scanner Epson 7450 with 9.10

Need help for installation of my Printer Scanner Epson7450 with Ubuntu. The printer works (sort of!) with no sign of ink level. The scanner is also not identified.
In another forum, I found a suggestion to vary this file with my Vendor as well as Product serial No:

    091109 Installation scanner
    asus@asus-laptop:~$ sane-find-scanner

    # sane-find-scanner will now try to identify your scanner. If the
    # Result is unusual from what you anticipated, first make sure your
    # Scanner is powered up as well as correctly connected to your PC.
    # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something poles apart, make sure that
    # You have installed a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
Found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0838) at libusb: 004:002
    # Your USB scanner was (probably) identified. It might or else may not be supported by
    # SANE. Try to scan image -L plus read the backend's manpage.
    # Not checking for parallel port scanners.
    # Most Scanners associated to the parallel port or else other proprietary ports
    # can't be recognized by this program.
    # You might want to run this program as root to locate all devices. Once you
    # found the scanner devices, be sure to alter access permissions as
    # Necessary.

But when I aim to save the file, it tells me that I don't have the right to alter it.
Whenever I installed my Ubuntu 9.4 that I have now upgraded to 9.10 it never asked me to describe a password for root. Therefore, I don't know how to login in as root..!

You should make use of the sudo command to run commands with super user privileges. It will request you for a password - enter your own password. You must have the administrator rights to be capable to use the sudo command.
