I have tried Ubuntu, Knoppix 4, Fedora, and SuSE and of them I found SuSE to be the most user-friendly though all are enough. I have some odd requirements and require more customization that Ubuntu allowed; perhaps the new Ubuntus are better there.

I found Ubuntu linux to be very easy to learn and also the install CD doubles as a live CD so you can test out the whole OS before you planning to install it!

The best Linux version for newbies would be ubuntu/kubuntu, they are great distributions, but they accentuate easy to use over customizability and optimization, and possibly even Stability in recent releases.

I will recommend you to try SuSE if it is compatible with your hardware or else Mandriva is a good option.Ubuntu is also good.

If you are new in Linux, Ubuntu is a good choice to start. Though, if something doesn’t work like it’s supposed to, good luck trying to solve what you would like to do to get it working.

According to me the best beginner's linux distro is Ubuntu.

Though Linux Mint is also good, so is Opens USE.

Kubuntu or Ubuntu, mainly they are the similar but Kubuntu comes with the KDE windows manager and Ubuntu is loaded with Gnome. KDE is similar to "Windows like".
