The problem arose when installing Ubuntu on the desktop of Vincent for the experience my head Drafting Linux .Vincent, like almost everyone in the writing has two screens and he placed a vertical it is often more convenient to read long web pages.

The problem is that the interface for setting the Nvidia drivers can not switch a screen. It would not matter if properly supported Nvidia Rand R standard that manages resizing and refocusing of screens under X .But this is not the case: Nvidia creates an abstraction of the screen, Rand R sees a single display comprising two screens.

Only solution just free drivers, which implement fully Rand R but do not allow graphics acceleration so no desktop effects no 3D software. An evolution of these drivers should provide these features soon but for lack of cooperation from the firm green, change is difficult and slow enough developers must resort to reverse engineering Windows drivers.

With a few weeks late we repeated the experiment and installed Ubuntu on a machine with an ATI card.

First surprise graphics acceleration is available original with free drivers. AMD has indeed presented the specifications of their cards and drivers therefore offer free 3D possibilities of course with full support for Rand R. Proprietary drivers are deemed more efficient we have still enabled .
