A big part of what keeps Linux costs low is open-source software. There is a vast library of open-source applications covering almost every conceivable niche. The trouble is that quality can vary hugely.
The only way to be sure is to test potential applications, and doing that right means getting your hands dirty. Too many 5MBs allow outside consultants to do their testing for them, then make the decision based on a testing report. That's a mistake.
Not just because the same conŽsultant is likely fishing for the installation contract, but also because it bypasses the folks who actually have to work with the software-your employees.
Testing new application software, especially software that's going to take the place of something your employees have been using to good advantage for years, means involving them in the testing process. That takes time and sweat, but it's well worth the effort in the end.
