There is no doubt that DVD video support is pretty non-existent in a fresh installation. To play DVDs you will need the libdvdcss library, which is not included for legal reasons. You can download the library from /pub/libdvdcss/l.2.9/deb/. Just click on the downloaded 'deb' file to install it.
The next problem is that the video player, Totem, has poor DVD support as it stands. Totem can use either the gstreamer or xine backend. Gstreamer
is the default, which has no support for DVD menus, and can only play the first
title on a disc. A good solution is to install VLC. This is extremely popular on Windows and Mac systems, and it plays almost all audio and video formats, as well as multiple region DVDs. You can find VLCinthe
Add/Remove Applications utility. Alternatively, install 'totem¬xine' to replace the gstreamer backend. You will also need 'Xine extra plugins'to support patented formats with this backend.
