• sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/"'. deb will get rid of all the deb packages that get used during installation. This saves some disk space.
• leons, wallpapers, applets and desktop effects are great consumers of valuable resources. Reducing their usage will considerably improve performance.
• Setting up a firewall is a very good idea (though it won't improve performance in any way). By default, Ubuntu gets installed with ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall). Ufw is a simple command-line front end for iptables. It's easy to learn and simple to deploy. For people who would prefer a graphical front-end, Firestarter is the best option. The reason is that there are fewer chances for an attacker to compromise your system if the vulnerabilities are less. Less packages mean less vulnerabilities related to them.
These simple measures and tweaks will definitely lead to giving more resources to applications than wasting them over the OS itself. Hope this article helps you have a better desktop experience.
