The Gigabyte EX58-UD5 is not only rich in features but also delivers quite a punch when you take performance into account. To be more precise, the EX58-UD5 knocked the socks off the Asus Rampage II Extreme to bag our Best Performance Award.

Built for the Core i7 range of processors the board is based on Intel's new X58 chipset. The X58 delivers great flexibility by allowing users to set up their machine either in CrossFireX and SLI. The EX58-UD5 has six DIMM slots that support a maximum of 24 GB of DDR3-1333 RAM which can be further overclocked to 2100 MHz. It goes without saying that you can run the memory in both dual as well as triple channel. As with all high end motherboards, the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 features low height solid capacitors around the CPU that leaves enough breathing space to allow proper airflow around the CPU. To enhance durability and improve energy efficiency the board includes 2 oz of copper sandwiched between the PCB.

With a wide range of hardware controllers the EX58-UD5 offers to fit larger fans with ease. A point worth noting would be the color coded unmatched overclocking headroom like no other. The board features Overvoltage ICs that allows overclockers to adjust voltage in small increments that are as little as 20mV. In addition, to prevent damage an OV-Alert LED displays the increase in voltage level for the CPU, memory, Northbridge and Southbridge. A 12-phase power design for the CPU and an additional 2+2-phase power for the Northbridge and memory ensures high efficiency and stability at high settings. The EX58-UD5 includes two physical BIOS ROMs that automatically recover BIOS data when the main fails. Apart from the fact that the board is solid performer, the EX58-UD5 also includes a dynamic 6-gear power phase sWitching chip. Known as Dynamic Energy Saver, it adjusts motherboard voltage levels when idle and during heavy load. VERDICT: The Gigabyte EX58-UD5 might not be a Rampage II Extreme killer when it comes to features but it does outperform the Asus board overall.
