The MSI 785GM-E51 has a micro ATX design and is powered by AM D's 785G chipset that supports AMD's latest Phenom II processors. The chipset is built around the new Radeon HD4200 processor but to keep costs down the 785GM-E51 doesn't include a dedicated Sideport memory. The board does have support for Hybrid Crossfire which combines the performance of the IGP along with a discrete Crossfire supported graphics card. You could call the Radeon HD4200 an updated version of the Radeon HD3200. With almost all aspects the same, the only major difference between the two chipsets is that the former now supports DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1.

Being a Socket AM3 board the 785GM-E51 can accommodate a total of 16 GB DDR3-1333 Mhz memory. The 785G chipset sports a new Southbridge; the 5B710. The new Southbridge supports a total of 12 USB ports, 5 SATA ports, 1 IDE port and HD Audio. A five phase power design provides steady power to the CPU for better efficiency and stability. The 785GM-E51 also makes up for a great HTPC with the new Radeon HD4200 IGP. With the HD4200 on board the user can play full 1080p content without putting too much stress on the processor. An overclocking switch allows you to increase the Front Side Bus (FSB) in increments of 10, 15 and 20 percent without getting into the BIOS.

Expansion slots come in the form of 1 PCI Express x16 slot, 1 PCI Express xl slot and 2 PCI slots. Clubbed with the Radeon HD3450 in Hybrid Crossfire the board churned out 26 fps at medium setting with the resolution kept at a reasonable 1024 x 768.
