Both Intel and AMD are at the end of their current product cycle, and are looking at new products by the end of this year. This may very well mean a new platform altogether, so in terms of future proofing the future is uncertain.

A good PC purchased right about now should be able to last for at least two years, and by that time the technology available at the end of 2008 would be mature, with all the initial hiccups associated with new products ironed out. Prices would also have fallen by then.
