This chip holds the real-time clock that keeps the date and time on your PC, as well as the CMOS RAM that holds your PC's BIOS settings. It is powered by the PC's built-in battery, which may in some cases be built into the real-time clock package itself. This chip is often marked "Dallas". after Dallas Semiconductor, the company that manufacture a large number of them. Many PCs have problems with their clock not keeping accurate time. See here for some ideas on how to set this.
