Default The network out of range error

I am in a new place on a IBM ThinkPad G40 running XP SP3 attempting to attach to Comcast cable internet during a Linksys wireless G router. I was almost the exact same setup where I lived before and never had any problem connecting via wifi to the network. Now though even when I sit in the same room as the router and try to attach to the network I get this message:
"The wireless network is either out of range or no longer exists, try refreshing available networks."

Everyone in home enables to attach and I have tried all the usual troubleshooting suspects and have not been able to solve. I read a much previous post from someone with similar problem and I just wanted to get a explanation.
If I stop the encryption, does this mean the network will no longer be password protected? Also, does my laptop need to be hooked up to the router to make these adjustments?

to solve the problom "The wireless network is either out of range or no longer exists, try refreshing available networks." do the following

    access your router.

under the security tab click on WPA/WPA2-PSK (Mixed Mode) and vola problom solved.

this happens because older laptops and new laptops have diffrent security measures when accessing the router (dont know why) the option which i mentioned allows the router to be able to accept both security configurations on the laptop.
    i know its .
