Default The PBworks User Manual ip restrictions

    Hi everyone

I have an office of 220 PCs.I am using windows 2003 r2 server as my dhcp server. I am using Mac binding to lease ips automatically by assigning mostly to every one. The problem is that some people are bringing laptops from outside and plugging into the network points and giving random manual ips. This sometime gives ip clashes with PCs which are getting their automatic ips. So is there anyway I can stop this problem. By any means I cannot stop everyone in office to plug their laptops but is there anyway after manually allotting ips and still particular Mac address will not get a reserved ip form dhcp server.

    Hello,all

Since there appears to be no policy keeping out employees from bringing in laptops so simply open up the whole DHCP range to just those addresses when a certain device requests it.

Normal user never gives IP address to PC by self. Most do not even know how. They maybe doing this because you have restricted network by not using DHCP. You are making a very easy problem way over complicated.

Turn on DHCP and allow everyone attach any PC they want. The company obviously has no policy keeping out such action. Getting IP addresses assigned is the last thing you should be worrying about.

IT organization does not begin and finish with simple management of hardware and protocols. It also about policies, hardware and software roadmaps, and presenting resolutions to issues.

    Hi,all

First, you have switches organized wrongly. Every switch should have a unique IP. The only way you can find away with having a group of switches connected together under one IP is if switches have capacity to be stacked. Stackable switches have a special cable that links the switches together so they behave as one large switch. There is a restriction to how many switches you stack together.

You want to go into every switch independently and set a unique IP address for all. They CANNOT all have similar IP. This may need you to take all of the switches off line except one to organize proper IP address. You enable to get away with plugging in a laptop straight to every switch and see if it responds to default IP address. Opening a web browser to default IP will bring up web management GUI. There should be a default user name and password. Go into administration pages and locate a sector where you can organize IP address of switch.
