Default Connecting Windows Vista Desktop & Windows XP Laptop

    Hi,everyone

I have a Dell desktop with Vista and a dell laptop running XP. I am attempting to permit laptop to share DeskJet 990cse printer, but when I go to add printer on laptop and choose network printer and browse for printer it cannot locate it. I have permitted printer sharing on desktop.

    Hi,

Can you ping both ways by IP address? By computer name?

Yes, I can ping both. The only trouble I have is observing the printer attaching to internet well.

    Hi,

The Workgroup names are most likely different as Vista is "workgroup" and XP Home is "Mshome" make them both same and you will possibly see it.

On Vista does the XP appears in Start - Network? If so do you notice the printer? Can access files?

Let's take a look at, for both PCs, ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
    Type the following commands:
    nbtstat -n
    IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and pick Select All, then press Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If needed make use of a text file and detachable media to copy results to a PC with internet access.

Vista will not share files, and printers, if as a minimum one user account on it and on remote PC are password protected.

Other than chance that no user accounts on either machine is password protected, or probably a non-Windows firewall or security suite on the Vista.
